Conversations with
the author
I have been trying to write a novel. But I get stuck at times, and for a long time, no matter how hard I try I cannot overcome this writer’s block. Have you too faced similar problem?
First of all there is no such thing called writer’s block. And secondly, you should stop thinking hard. Let the story come to you. Relax, listen to music, take a walk around your garden. This should definitely help you.
Does one need to be born with in-born skills to be a writer?
No. To be a good writer one needs to have imagination. And humans are born with imagination. So, what one actually needs is to be consistent and have never give up attitude.
I have read ‘Listen to my heartbeat’. And I’m madly in love with Aryan. How did you come up with such a character which even today lingers in my heart?
Well, I’m madly in love with Aryan too. It actually took me months to get over his character after I finished the novel. It is difficult to say how I came up with a character like him. As I started writing, he just materialized in my mind.
When did you decide to be a writer?
When I wrote Listen to my Heartbeat. After I finished the book, I gave it to some of my friends to read, and they absolutely loved it . It was them who asked me to publish it. And once it was published, it was loved by readers all over india. That’s how my journey as a writer began.
We are eagerly waiting for your next book. Any clues on what to expect ?
Well, it will be about love triangle, friendship and loads of fun.
Who’s your fav-author and how did their work inspire you?
Charles Dickens and JK Rowling. Both of their writings has its own unique charm. Charles Dickens is an amazing narrator. I loved how he describes a scenario. I still remember a scene from ‘A tale of two cities’. He had described this rum or wine spilled on the road in a scene. It’s still vivid in my mind. It was as if… i was actually there, in that era. His stories made me dream. And JK Rowling, well, she’s the reason i started writing novels. My first novel isn’t actually ‘Listen to my heartbeat.’ It was about magic. And I wrote it during my college days. But, i never completed it. Hopefully, I’ll finish it in the future, and publish it.
Apart from love, your books are also about friendship. Is it in anyway inspired by your life?
Yes. Friends have always been an integral part of my college life. In fact, my second book’s character, Aditi, is based on one of my best friends. She is shorter than me, and a few months younger to me, but has always acted like my elder sister… mentoring me, advising me. I will not mention her name, but she will know when she reads this.
How long do you prepare or research before you start writing a book?
To say ‘how long it takes to prepare,’ is a complicated thing. Coming up with a story is not hard for me. But, perfecting it, takes time. And when it comes to researching… well, I normally do it while I write.
Off late romance novels are mostly centered on sex than love. Are your works on the same line?
No. My works are mostly based on emotions. I don’t believe love is all about sex. I think love is more about emotions. You can be in a relation without sex, but you cannot be in a relation without emotions.
What according to you is a good story?
Anything that comes from heart.
How hard is it to get books published?
Getting a book published is very easy these days. But, establishing yourself is equally hard.
